Redfish Hunting

I went out fishing this morning with a friend that owns a kayak shop here in Corpus and we had a great time. Some of the fish were big enough to pull us around for a while in the kayaks, it makes you wonder who is catching who.

Ike may have missed us but....

We luck out with Ike going North of Corpus but we're still seeing the effects with high water and a little bit of trash on the beaches. I drove down the beach today and saw a number of people sorting through all the trash looking for some lost treasure or something. I'm not sure what this guy had, but it looked more like junk than treasure to me.

Cloudy Stormy Day in Corpus...

Today was like one of those cloudy stormy days we have in the fall in Oregon, only it's 85 degrees here. It's odd looking out the window of the house and thinking it looks cold and gloomy outside and then walking out the door to 85f at 80% humidity. Anyway, I was driving over to the beach to take bandit out for some swimming and some bird chasing when I passed this shallow lagoon with a beautiful white Egret standing in the water. I had my camera bag with me so I grabbed my longest lens and headed out to see how close I could get without scaring off my subject. As I started walking out I stopped for a second and thought about bug spray, but it was windy and I was only going to be out there for a minute or two. So now I'm bent over walking through the shallow water stalking my prey trying to get as close as possible so I get get the best shot. I'm now out about forty yards from the van and thirty yards from the Egret when I get the camera turned on and ready to take some shots and hear this awful buzzing all around my head and face. GIANT MOSQUITOES!!! I try and swat a few of them away and notice that my arms are covered in mosquitoes and now I can feel them on my back eating me alive. I looked through the viewfinder of the camera, focused on the bird, took two shots and ran like hell for the van. Note to self: Always use bug spray when walking in a swamp!

Hurrican Ike!!!!

This is not what I was hoping my first couple of weeks in Texas was going to be like. We've been boarding up the house, stocking up on food and water (diet coke) and just about everything you might need for a long camping trip at home. Currently the Storm is tracking to our North up towards Galveston and should just his us with some high winds and a little rain. I am now much more of a hurricane expert than I ever hoped to be. For those in the NW it's like have the news stations telling you Mt. Hood is going to erupt, but they aren't sure what side of the mountain is going to blow up. We are ready to tuck our tails and run if it comes to that but we're hoping the forecast holds true and we luck out.

Here's a good site to follow the Storm with http://www.stormpulse.com/
